Description:
Nolay, in east-central France, preserves its late-medieval market hall. The rectangular, open-sided building consists of an oak and chestnut framework on stone piers supporting a four-sided roof clad with overlapping limestone slabs. The date 1388 is incised on one beam, although the hall was remodeled in the sixteenth century. Excavations nearby revealed the communal oven that was central to medieval daily life.
