Description:
This block-printed paper amulet was folded to fit into a tiny lead case that would be worn on the owner's body. The text combines protective verses from the Qur'an, and the case is inscribed with yet another apotropaic sura. The minuscule Kufic script lacks vowels and accent marks, which would have complicated the printing process. Such mass-produced printed talismans were less expensive than handwritten ones but just as effective for the owner, even if he or she never read (and probably could not read) the sealed contents.
